Coarse Angling
Killaloe is located on the Lough Derg - an immense sheet of water – where the Shannon starts its final run to the Atlantic Ocean. There’s no doubt that both the river and lake are home to record-breaking fish. Close by are the famous O’Brien’s Bridge and Castleconnell stretches of the River Shannon. East Clare is a beautiful lake district dotted with more than 40 loughs and rivers in unspoiled countryside with rich stocks of tench, bream, rudd, roach, perch and pike.
The town’s resident expert, fishing tackle dealer and bait stockist, is TJ O’Brien with a shop located facing the river in Ballina. He also provides a unique guiding service that includes pre-baiting on private shorelines and taking anglers to the prepared swims by fast boat. www.tjsangling.com
Pike Angling
Pike are everywhere in Ireland. There is no close season, no licences required and they provide brilliant sport whether it is a 6lb fish on a fly or a 30lb monster on a deadbait. Bank fishing is freely available or boat hire is available and while it may vary slightly in costs, the average for a substantial boat, engine and petrol for the day, is about £30. A list of qualified guides can be found by going to www.cfb.ie To a man; they are all first and foremost pike anglers themselves. Their services vary but all include options for shore guiding or with a boat, from a day or a whole week. |
